For all the times we were scared
For all the times we were depressed
For all the times we were anxious

Thought we didn’t deserve it,
Thought we were not worth it
Thought we were not worthy
Thought we were not going to make it

For all the times we might have forgotten…

Forgotten we were blessed
Forgotten we have been chosen
Forgotten how favoured we have been.

Highly favoured.

Black Minds (What if)

I wonder what the black man’s mind would be,
If he didn’t have to straighten the disturbing kinks of his act, his speech, his views, his way to think
If he wasn’t (still) slave to the need to conform to
others’ ways
If he wasn’t scared by the whip of blame –
Worried of passing on (his genes)
His burden, every time he ‘came’ –
If he wasn’t haunted by his very own name
The “NIGGER” whom to many he remains –
If he wasn’t thinking of shackles (depravation)
Eating the meagre grains of oppression –
If he wasn’t armed with the spear of constant strength
Having to rip, hurt and build his muscles for self-defence
For his burden to fit on his black back- held by sturdy hands. –
If he wasn’t Playing the drum of social change,
Singing the same song of equality –
If he didn’t (still) have to be Luther King
But His only reality lying within wet dreams

Which he would almost always never live to see –
Yes, my brothers,
I really wonder what our true reflection would be
If we didn’t have to consider all of this –
If our minds wasn’t bound
By the outer colour of our skins.

Memories of a World Like This.

‘Humanism vs Reality vs Politics’.
Are the real subjects, the disciplines taught at the human university of life.
The rhetorical hypothesis of our investigations:
‘Where are we headed?’

‘Liberté, egalité, fraternité’
My French state once proclaimed as a symbol of its blood earnt freedom.
But today as I look around,
I ask,
Where is the fraternity?
I see a lot of liberty to hurt and condemn
Indeed, where is the equality?

Who holds their brother’s hand in equality,
In heartfelt fraternity?
Who looks at lifeless children, victims of this triviality and sees their own?
Who sees beyond the frontiers of their comfort zone, the frontiers of their seemingly innocent ignorance?

It’s just another day for you and me in paradise
A treacheous paradise in which we can very easily rotate fortunes
Where a life of privileges is never guaranteed.
With karma forever omnipresent.
Yesterday me, today him, tomorrow it could be you.

Human pain is felt by all,
When you step on my toes, I will react
When you cut me with a knife, I will bleed
When I catch a lost bullet, I will fall to the ground.
When a bomb explodes…I will surely disintegrate
Every dead has someone to mourn him.
No one fell from the sky.

We are 7 Billion and still counting…
A new blooming life only 7 seconds away.
All statistics, Numbers and digits
You see, numbers are cold, senseless,
It is words that give us warmth, a life and identity.
Quantity over quality…
What is the real worth of your life?

We have no control over our destinies
Just the hope that a few prayers will sway good fortune in our favour.
We humans are nothing.
Just like all nature, destined to return to dust ‘Dust thou art and dust thou will remain’.
Take away the ego, the flash, the discourse, the stallions we ride…what is left?
Much ado about nothing.

Yet casting my memory back, I will always marvel at how we were, in this world I once knew.

What is the worth of life?

is the unanswered rethoric
Which I simply leave

While I gaze back over
The memories of this world I knew

Memories of a world like this.

Taught to ‘think’.

Taught to think.

We are born then raised

Natured or nurtured

Socialised or Assimilated

Individualised or categorised.

I guess there is nothing wrong with that.
The world has to make something of us.
We have to fit in somewhere, somehow.

The concept of thinking is a human signature. We were born to think.
Born to make sense of the world by using this very process.

Teach me to think, how to use my brain to make sense of this world.
To go beyond what I can see at the tip of my nose.

Teach me to analyse, to explore, examine,
To rationalise, to contrast, to infer to synthesize.

Teach me to self actualise intellectually.

Teach me how to think.
But dont tell me

What
To think.
